How to detect internal leakage in a distillation column reboiler?
A composition analysis is performed on the outlet of the low-pressure side; if material from the high-pressure side is detected, it indicates an internal leak.
Phenomenon: Abnormal fluctuations in tower temperature and pressure, abnormal product composition, or abnormal tower load. Stop discharging material immediately, cut off the steam. There should be a certain pressure inside the tower; open the bypass of the steam trap to check whether any material is being discharged
The temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the shell-and-tube section can be compared (large leaks are more evident in this regard), or the composition of the material at the low-pressure end can be analyzed; these details can be identified during shutdown as well
If the pressure of the heated material is on the low-pressure side, a sample can be taken to analyze whether it contains components of the material being processed.
To determine if there is a leak inside the reboiler: First, close sampling devices can be installed along the steam condensate pipeline; if analysis of the sample reveals the presence of medium components, it indicates a leak inside the reboiler. Second, the temperature of the condensate pipeline can be monitored; if this temperature is high, it suggests a leak. Third, the temperature of the medium at the reboiler’s outlet can be checked; a high temperature there also indicates a leak inside the reboiler
When parking, determine whether there is an internal leak by checking the shell side of the reboiler, specifically by using pH test strips.
Generally, the steam pressure in the reboiler is higher than the tower pressure. After water is introduced into the tower, the tower pressure fluctuates, the liquid level becomes unstable, the moisture content of the light components at the top of the tower increases, and the level in the reflux tank rises more rapidly. The liquid level in the condensate tank will drop
It’s simple – reboilers are generally heated by steam. Steam leaks into the material, causing its moisture content to be extremely high. Just measure the moisture content of the material
