Today, I heard one of my colleagues say that only Sinopec has coking units in its refineries, while CNPC’s refineries do not have such units. I’m really worried that learning about coking might become useless in the future. Those who are familiar with the situation, please share your thoughts!
CNPC refineries don’t have coking units——complete nonsense.
Future refineries should adopt the full hydrogenation approach, but coking is currently the main method for processing residue oil; so how can it be said that there is no way forward? Sinopec has 35 coking units, while CNPC has no less than 10; as for local refineries, there are roughly 40 of them. The coking unit is one of the five major units in current oil refining.
Although different processes result in varying roles for coking in refineries, coking is definitely essential.

Coking is an important device for balancing light and heavy components, and it requires relatively low investment; therefore it will continue to be used for a long time. Since the investment in residue hydrogenation units is high and there are still many technical challenges associated with such units, only a few residue hydrogenation units exist in China. Most refineries rely on coking to deal with residue, including CNPC and Sinopec.
CNPC has more large-scale coking units; a mature oil refining project cannot do without coking units, as this is the most effective way to process heavy crude oils, especially residue. Relying solely on catalytic cracking is not sufficient to address the issues caused by the increasing heaviness of crude oils.
