Disc oil is an intermediate component of the quench oil tower; it is neither pyrolysis gas oil nor quench oil, with its main components being C11–C13. It is a component obtained from the chimney tray of the quench oil tower in the ethylene plant using the SW process.

In current ethylene processes, only LUMMUS uses a single (quench oil) circulation for heat removal via oil cooling. The remaining patents generally use quench oil for heat removal and cracked diesel circulation for heat removal. What is generally referred to as oil circulation is the heat removal process using cracked diesel in the middle of the quench oil tower
In the SW process, there is an oil tray in the middle of the quench oil tower, also known as a chimney tray. The oil drawn from there is called tray oil, and it is used primarily for heat recovery. In some places, this tray oil is also referred to as intermediate oil, with a composition roughly in the range of C11–C13
