In which chemical processes are plate towers generally used?

Systems that are prone to clogging or foaming: Fillers are quite expensive after all. Unless there are special requirements, such as extreme demands regarding efficiency, pressure drop, tower diameter, etc., for systems that require high cleanliness, trays are generally used – they’re cheaper after all

Environments where plate towers are used: The composition of the fluid involves solids – cleaning the trays in such systems is relatively easy. Mass transfer is controlled by the liquid film. High liquid load – can be managed more efficiently in plate towers. High operating pressures. Water-based systems. Heat exchange is required inside the tower, and the tower itself needs to be inspected regularly. For applications for which there is limited practical experience, plate towers are usually chosen as the starting point for design.

Environments where packed towers are used: The composition is sensitive to temperature and pressure drops (changes in temperature and pressure can lead to the separation of compounds like condensates); examples include vacuum towers. Mass transfer is controlled by the gas film. Low liquid phase load. Systems operating at low to medium pressures. Water-free systems. Systems with low foaming tendency. Small tower diameters – maintenance and installation of plate towers can be more difficult. Batch distillation – requires a low liquid holdup volume. Highly corrosive environments.
