Recently, when goods were being dispatched, I found that my more than 1,000 meters of shielded compensation wire (model: ZR-KX-FVP) was missing; I have no idea who took it. I checked the areas where thermocouples are installed, and none of those locations had my specific model of compensation wire installed there. So I wonder if it’s possible that the electrical personnel don’t understand how to use compensation wires, and have used them as ordinary control cables, power cables, or telephone lines? ? ? Is it possible? Is it okay to use them interchangeably like this? Is there any difference in how compensation wires transmit current or voltage signals compared to other ordinary shielded copper-core cables?
Compensation wires are special wires made of alloy copper; based on the model you provided, it is nickel-chromium-nickel-silicon, which has a relatively high resistance and tends to generate a lot of heat when in use. In many cases, thermocouples do not require compensation wires; for example, with a Type B thermocouple where the hot end is at 1500° and the temperature at the terminal is 50°, the temperature difference when using a compensation wire versus not using one is only 0.2°. Compensation wires can also be used as signal wires; there is no problem using them for 4-20mA signals. They can be used as power lines as long as the load power is not too high, but they must never be used as signal wires for thermistors. The principle is that the load resistance must be large enough to be used.
