Simulating reactive distillation problems using ratefrac

This post was last edited by liuyu_xjtu on 2010-11-5 21:37. I’ve been trying to use ratefrac to simulate reactive distillation these past few days; I used radfrac before. I’ve almost finished filling in the details, but then a problem arose: “Holdup segments (column reactions holdup sheet) cannot overlap with tray segments (column trayspecs specifications sheet)”. This warning keeps appearing on the page where I enter the liquid holdup values for the reaction segments in the column. Has anyone encountered this issue? How can it be resolved? Thank you! ~ PS: One more important question – when using Aspen to simulate reactive distillation, how is the amount of catalyst determined? Is it set by the liquid holdup in the reaction section? (I used to set it this way; I found something was wrong in ratefrac.)

Well, I used RADFRAC before as well; it uses the liquid holdup to represent the amount of catalyst. I didn’t use RATEFRAC. I think RATEFRAC is based on the assumption of a non-equilibrium stage, and it might need to utilize the liquid holdup parameter during calculations. It’s just a guess; I’m looking forward to replies from experts

I am performing an Aspen simulation for the reactive distillation of ethyl acetate. Does anyone have examples of such simulations? Please send it to me at 1454947221@qq.com
