Abstract: The operation and performance of a SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) stack using biomass syngas produced by a biomass gasification CHP (combined heat and power) plant are investigated. The aim of this work is to develop a model of a biomass-SOFC system that can predict its performance under various operating conditions. Tubular SOFC technology was chosen for this purpose. A SOFC stack model of the equilibrium type, based on Gibbs free energy minimization, was developed using Aspen Plus. This model performs heat and mass balance calculations, and takes into account ohmic, activation, and concentration losses when calculating voltage. The model was validated using data from studies on natural gas operation. Various operating parameters were examined; parameters such as the fuel utilization factor (Uf), current density (j), and STCR (steam to carbon ratio) had a significant impact on performance. The results show that there is a trade-off between voltage, efficiency, and power depending on the value of j, and that the stack should operate at low STCR and high Uf levels. Performance when using biomass syngas was compared to that when using natural gas, and as expected, the performance declined. Realistic operating conditions that enable high performance were identified. High efficiencies are predicted for these systems, making them very attractive.
