I have a client who needs a rotameter for measuring acetic acid at 80°C. The manufacturer recommended Hastelloy C alloy, but its price is too high. Is it possible to use 316Ti instead? In rotameters, there are options such as lined cone tubes and floats – why must it be a metal material that is in direct contact with the fluid? The RAMC series from Yokogawa Electric features floats with PTFE linings or PTFE-coated surfaces, which are fully capable of handling such operating conditions. If only metal materials can be used, duplex steel is the best choice.
The gasketed connection parts are unreliable, and the environmental conditions are poor as well; therefore, a fully metal contact surface is the only option!
Stainless steel can be used for a short period at 80°C, but it is recommended to use Hastelloy C instead!

In reality, foreigners use high-quality materials in such situations; the initial investment is higher, but the product lasts longer. In the domestic market, factors such as one-time investments also need to be taken into account; the approaches vary from usage to production and distribution – it’s a different mindset! I work in distribution; there’s nothing I can do – that’s just the overall situation!

If it is possible to choose another type of flow meter, an electromagnetic flow meter can be used, and then all the problems will be solved. It’s just that electromagnetic flowmeters are a bit more expensive.
