The installation of flow meters generally requires straight pipe sections before and after them; sometimes diameter changes are necessary. In such cases, should the reducer fittings be placed on either side of the flow meter or on the sides of the straight pipe sections (with the same diameter as the flow meter)? Why?
It depends on where you need to measure the flow rate – the flow rate at the elbow pipe, which is located on both sides of the elbow pipe. To measure the flow velocity at the outlet of a straight pipe, it is installed in the straight pipe section. The flow velocity at the reducer is relatively high; due to the sudden reduction in the flow cross-sectional area, the pressure increases, resulting in pressure loss. Meanwhile, the energy loss in the straight pipe section is almost negligible.
Generally, the diameter-changing components are installed on both sides of the flow meter.
