Do manufacturing plants generally follow the welding joint types specified by design institutes in the drawings? Usually, the notch types used by design institutes and manufacturing plants are different
Most of the joints at the design institute are welded using TIG welding with a root gap of 2 mm, while manufacturing plants use submerged arc welding on both sides.
As long as the welding performance and quality of the manufacturer meet the same requirements, it is allowed for the manufacturer to change the joint type specified in the drawings.
The drawings from the design institute are only for reference; it should be the welding engineers at the manufacturing plant who determine the details within the standard range, taking into account the plant’s workforce, equipment capabilities, and PQR requirements.
Since the manufacturing quality of a product is the responsibility of the manufacturing unit, it has the right to decide on its own the welding and manufacturing processes that will ensure such quality. The drawings provided by the design team are for reference only; however, the manufacturing unit generally takes into account the designer’s intentions, the characteristics of the product, as well as its own manufacturing conditions and capabilities.
