We use pyrite for acid production by roasting, and now we want to sell the slag as iron ore. What grade is considered profitable? The sulfur content in the material fed into the furnace is around 43%, while the iron content in the slag varies – it can be as high as over 60% or as low as around 52%. How should we process it in order to be able to sell the iron powder? Some suggested going ahead with a magnetic separation project, while others suggested producing ferrous sulfate. Please discuss it.
Reply to 1# Zou Yang: The baking temperature should be higher in order to burn off the sulfur completely and increase the iron content; it’s better to sell the iron.
It is still more cost-effective to use a ball mill and then a magnetic separator to improve the purity before selling the iron powder. There is poor demand for ferrous sulfate, and the price of sulfuric acid is high at present.
How about using the ancient hydrochloric acid leaching method: dissolving with waste hydrochloric acid and reducing with hydrogen to produce pure iron powder?
Rotary kilns or the direct reduction method can be used to process slag in order to produce iron ore or granular iron. Besides iron, are there any other metals in the slag, such as copper, gold, silver, etc.? If these have value for recovery, the benefits become even greater
