The sludge from the pretreater is dried by filtration using a filter press before being removed. If there is a lot of sludge in the upper layer, it is difficult to compress it dry. Magnesium sludge is in a colloidal state, making it difficult to dry it using a filter press; as a result, the sludge obtained after pressing remains a very thin, viscous paste.
The original poster, you are using a process that involves pretreatment followed by a clarification tank; this type of process is rarely used these days. Generally, the preferred approach is pretreatment combined with reverse osmosis membranes. However, we have also encountered situations similar to those you described – when the magnesium content in the raw salt is high, it’s difficult to produce sludge, and the sludge that is formed is quite dilute.
