I’m not sure if there are any distinct advantages or disadvantages for each type. Now I need to choose a check valve to place after the pump (water flows upward over a distance of 25 meters); is it better to use a vertical or a straight-through check valve? Could some expert give me some advice? Thank you to all the marine friends for their replies. I wonder if anyone can explain why vertical check valves are chosen or what their advantages are.
Water flows upward; it’s not clear how large the height difference is, so a vertical design is better.

Based on your description, it seems the valve needs to be placed vertically; in that case, it’s indeed better to choose a vertical type. Because the vertical valve disc is upright, it does not sag due to gravity, and can basically function properly ; If a straight-through type (i.e., swing type) is used, the valve disc will naturally hang downward due to gravity, frequently impacting the valve seat and affecting the valve’s lifespan and performance (if the pressure in the pipeline is not high enough to overcome the weight of the valve disc, it will not be possible to pass fluid through this valve).
The question posed by the original poster is quite strange. A one-way valve: classified by structure, it can be divided into lift-type one-way valves, swing-type one-way valves, and butterfly-type one-way valves. Lifting check valves can be divided into vertical and horizontal types. Swing check valves are divided into three types: single-disc, double-disc, and multi-disc. Butterfly check valves are of the straight-through type; the aforementioned check valves can be connected in three ways: threaded connection, flange connection, and welding. Your vertical and straight-through types are two different concepts – how do you choose?
