At what leakage level of the mechanical seal is it urgent to replace it?
The standard is 10 drops per minute for light oil and 5 drops per minute for heavy oil. For safety reasons, in practice, the light oil is usually replaced as soon as there is a leak, while slight leaks of heavy oil are acceptable provided that cleaning up the spill isn’t a problem
API682 specifies that for mechanical seals with a shaft diameter (or outer diameter of the shaft sleeve) of ≤50 mm, the leakage rate is 3 ml/h; for mechanical seals with a shaft diameter (or outer diameter of the shaft sleeve) greater than 50 mm, the leakage rate is 5 ml/h. The leakage rate for packing seals is 1200 ml/h
