Is it crevice corrosion? Crevice corrosion. In electrolyte solutions, within the narrow gaps that form between the surfaces of titanium and other metals, as well as between titanium and non-metals, the flow of the medium is hindered, which leads to the gradual depletion of oxygen in the solution within those gaps. As a result, the titanium surface loses its passivation layer and begins to dissolve. This creates a difference in electrode potential between the titanium inside the gaps and that outside them. Such electrochemical unevenness causes the titanium within the gaps to develop ulcer-like grooves of certain shapes, or these defects may connect together to form larger areas of damage similar to pitting corrosion. The decrease in oxygen concentration in the solution within the gap causes chloride ions to migrate from outside the gap into it, thereby increasing the acidity of the solution in that gap and accelerating the autocatalytic acidification process due to the hydrolysis of metal chlorides, which speeds up the intergranular corrosion of titanium. It is generally believed that titanium is less prone to crevice corrosion in chloride solutions below 120°C, while crevice corrosion occurs easily when the gap width is between 0.1 and 0.7 mm.
