Starting in 2010, Shenhua Baotou’s MTO unit was brought online successfully, Ningxia Coal’s MTP unit was successfully tested, and Datang’s MTP unit is about to undergo testing. This year, the self-sufficiency rate for ethylene is 55%, and that for propylene is 62%. Please discuss the current status and future prospects of various coal-based olefin industries. Note $ # $ $

In September 2008, the **National Development and Reform Commission temporarily halted new coal-to-oil projects, mainly due to the extremely high initial investment required. Due to the deterioration of the economic situation in 2009 and the effects of the housing market bubble in 2010, a large amount of speculative capital was unable to find suitable investment opportunities. **As a result, approval processes for coal chemical projects became relatively more lenient. However, given the high levels of investment and technical complexity associated with the coal-to-oil industry, it will take some time before this sector can achieve true industrialization; there is no need to rush things.
As long as the three major players in coal-based olefins – Shenhua Baotou, Ningxia Coal, and Datang – start operating smoothly, there will continue to be a focus on this area, given that China’s basic national condition is a shortage of oil and an abundance of coal.
In the near future, a dozen or so projects will be launched one after another!
