On November 4th, the key technology project under the 863 Program aimed at the industrialization of coal underground gasification passed the evaluation session organized by the Department of High-Tech Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Relying on industrial test facilities, this project aims to address the bottlenecks in underground coal gasification technology. It seeks to master key technologies for the industrialization of underground coal gasification, such as stable control techniques for the gasification process, as well as technologies for monitoring, early warning, and prevention of pollutants. A simulation and evaluation system for the gasification process will be developed, resulting in an industrial production system with a capacity of over 200,000 Nm3 of gas per day. The expert panel unanimously agreed that the project has clear objectives, reasonably formulated research topics, with its goals and contents organically linked to the overall project objectives, demonstrating strong coherence. The demonstration project on which the initiative is based has been implemented, with committed funding available; the organizational approach takes advantage of the integrated strengths of industry, academia, and research, ensuring the successful execution of the project. The implementation of this project will establish a research and development platform for coal in-situ gasification technology in our country, as well as innovation bases and experimental demonstration sites for such technology, with the aim of cultivating high-level talent in this field. The implementation of this project and the dissemination of its outcomes can be utilized for recovering coal resources left behind in old mines. It represents an important supplement to China’s coal mining and utilization technologies, and holds great strategic significance for fully leveraging China’s advantage of abundant coal resources, producing clean energy, adjusting the country’s energy structure, and ensuring a secure energy supply.
