Biological biofilm-forming filler

Currently, I am looking for a cheap biological biofilm-forming filler to be used in biological filters, so that aerobic bacteria can attach to its surface. Some people have suggested using coal cinders as a substitute for Raschig rings as filler – is this feasible? Also, at what water flow rate will an amount of aerobic bacteria be lost? Is there an empirical formula?
Braided biological filler, but it’s used in aerobic tanks; biological filters should use filter media, right?
