However, no one learned this stuff during school – things like material selection, determining pressure levels, arranging pipe supports, and thermal compensation. I wonder if there is a specialized field for pipeline design. If I want to learn this on my own, where should I start?

From my experience, it’s still necessary to get involved in projects and work diligently on a project under the guidance of an experienced person; that way, one will become familiar with the basic workflow. Look at more diagrams, ask more questions, take the opportunity to visit the site in person, summarize the mistakes made, and accumulate knowledge from other fields. In short, try to learn about and engage with everything related to your work; there are only advantages, no disadvantages.

In accordance with design procedures aligned with international standards and professional specialization: the process engineering field is divided into the following specialties: process engineering, process systems, process piping, equipment layout, piping materials, piping machinery, heat exchanger analysis, and pumps (or dynamic equipment) engineering. Currently, each design institute determines the division of labor for process-related tasks based on its size and staff composition. In some cases, due to personnel being under control, no distinction is made at all, and the process engineering department handles everything (in other words, all the tasks mentioned above are carried out by the process engineering department).
