Our company purchased a ZWC-2001 model microcomputer-based salt content analyzer; the previous day, due to a damaged measuring electrode, the entire electrolytic cell was taken to that company for repair. According to the company’s technical staff, aside from the measurement electrode being a platinum electrode, the other three electrodes (the electrolytic anode, the electrolytic cathode, and the reference electrode) are silver rods coated with silver chloride. Manufacturers generally need to replace these electrodes every 3 months to half a year. This differs from my previous understanding of the principle behind microcoulometers; if any of you have a deeper understanding of this principle, please feel free to provide some guidance.
The salt content analyzer operates on the principle of microcoulomb titration: the halides in crude oil are heated and extracted into water, and the chloride ions in the sample dissolve in this water. This solution containing chloride ions is then added directly to the titration cell. Electrolysis is used to generate silver ions, which react with the chloride ions. Once the reaction is complete, electrolysis to produce silver ions stops automatically. The computer then calculates the amount of chloride ions or salt content in the sample based on the amount of electricity consumed in generating those silver ions.

I don’t know how it is with their manufacturer; in any case, I’ve never heard of such a claim from other manufacturers. There are also microcoulomb electrolyzers for chlorine production that use silver chloride as well; I’ve never heard of anything like that. Please consider it, OP

Yesterday morning, I got in touch with that company to ask about the principle of the microcoulomb analyzer as well as the details regarding the electrodes (since the day before yesterday, one of our company’s technicians went there to carry out repairs; I was worried that they might not have understood the principle). They explained that the electrodes are coated not with silver chloride, but with sodium chloride, as well as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, among others. Since the company on the other end was very impatient when I asked them questions about this matter, it was not possible to get detailed information, and I was quite dissatisfied. I doubt whether their electrodes are actually made of genuine silver and platinum; otherwise, why would they need to be replaced every three months? And it’s not possible to explain the issues raised to customers effectively. (I originally wanted to record the exact words from the phone call, but to avoid unnecessary hassle, I’ll skip that here. Hello, I just consulted an engineer from Jiangsu Jiangfen, and he confirmed that it is indeed necessary to replace the electrodes; the time required depends on the cleanliness of the samples and their frequency of use. Additionally, the electrodes are plated with silver chloride. Also, this can be electroplated by oneself; the manufacturer should provide the methods and conditions for plating.
Try not to touch the electrodes. Pay attention to the rotor’s speed, and definitely avoid using the wrong electrolyte
Our company is involved in measuring the salt content in crude oil; if there are any issues, we can discuss them together, as the principles are the same. Let’s first talk about how we use it. 1. Generally, an electrode can be used for about two to three months after being plated once, but I usually replace it as soon as I notice it turning white, because the quality of electroplating directly affects the peak formation speed and shape, which in turn influences the integration value. 2. We plate the electrodes ourselves, using a 10% sodium chloride solution as the plating solution. Only two electrodes need to be plated (made of silver rods; before each plating process, they are polished, rinsed with ultrapure water, and then dried with nitrogen). These are the measurement electrode and the anode. The plating process lasts for ten minutes, until a dark brown color is achieved. The references are usually provided by the manufacturer, and electroplating involves toxic substances as well as being complicated, so there is no need for it. The cathode is made of platinum wire, so it also does not require electroplating. It was found that using scalding hot water as a bath in the electroplating solution yields excellent results, with minimal silver exposure.
