I am currently working on a special project involving a buried propane storage tank. Propane is considered a Class A substance, and since the tank is buried, what type of level gauge would be suitable?
For radar level gauges, additionally, you need to perform calculations based on the SIL rating in order to select another type of level gauge – or a fork-type switch
For storage tanks buried directly in the ground, a radar level gauge should be used; an ultrasonic level gauge can also be considered. I would like to ask whether groundwater level is taken into consideration when using buried storage tanks. I encountered a chemical plant that had propane storage tanks buried underground; these tanks had a capacity of 35 cubic meters and a diameter of 2 meters. By the time I discovered them, they were already buried underground. From a safety perspective, I refused to allow them to be used for storing propane. What happened was that one night, after heavy rain, the tanks rose to the surface, and all the pipes and valves broke. Even when containing propylene, if its specific gravity differs from that of water or the amount contained varies, floating will occur, which is very dangerous and poses serious safety risks.
