When using a throttling element to measure flow rate via differential pressure, taking the square root is necessary, as the flow rate is proportional to the square root of the differential pressure. It’s not clear whether what the original poster meant was that in cases where differential pressure is used, sometimes a square root needs to be taken and sometimes it doesn’t. Because some perform the squaring on the DCS, while others do it on the transmitter!
On the system or instrument, one of the square roots must be present, and it is the only one that is required. Personally, I think it’s better to use the square root of the gauge reading, as it makes it convenient to check the gauge values on-site as well.
Taking the square root is necessary because there is a formula Q=K*sqrt(differential pressure); since the flow rate signal is related to the differential pressure signal in a quadratic manner, taking the square root is required.
All differential pressure flow meters, including orifice plates, nozzles, Anemometers, Venturi tubes, wedges, etc., require taking the square root; Vortex street, electromagnetic, rotor, mass, etc. – no need for square roots ; It mainly depends on the measurement principle
