As the title suggests, what is the purpose of drilling many small holes around the impact shield?
The flow area at the minimum distance around the anti-erosion plate must be larger than the area of the inlet pipe. When the gap between the anti-erosion plate and the shell wall is very small, the flow area at that minimum distance is insufficient; to compensate for this, it is necessary to create some holes to provide additional area.
