Henan Coal Chemical’s thousand-ton carbon fiber project has produced qualified products

It took only 12 months from the project’s inception to the production of qualified products, which is half the time required for similar projects in China. Such a rapid construction pace can be considered a miracle in the history of carbon fiber development in China, and it marks an important step forward by Henan Coal Chemical Group in its efforts to establish the largest high-performance carbon fiber production base in the country. 　　The project for annual production of thousands of tons of carbon fiber is a key initiative by Henan Coal Chemical Group aimed at adjusting its industrial structure and gaining a competitive edge in the high-end segment of the coal chemical industry. It is developed through a partnership between Henan Coal Chemical Group and the Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and it represents the only enterprise in Henan Province that produces carbon fiber products. The project was launched on November 17, 2009; the construction team for the main facility area began work on March 16 of this year, and qualified carbon fiber products were produced on November 16. It took only 12 months from the project’s inception to the production of qualified products, and just 8 months from the start of construction to the same outcome; this is half the time required for similar projects in China. Such a rapid construction pace is unprecedented in the history of carbon fiber development in China. 　 　　It is understood that carbon fiber is a high-end, technology-intensive material that leads in China and is at world-class standards. Its density is less than 1/4 that of steel, while its tensile strength is 7 to 9 times that of steel. It can withstand high temperatures and pressures, and is widely used in advanced fields such as aerospace, offering broad market prospects. The first phase of this project involves an investment of 740 million yuan, and it will enable the annual production of 500 tons of MH300 high-performance carbon fiber. This is of great strategic significance for breaking foreign monopolies on high-performance carbon fiber as well as lifting the technical restrictions imposed on our country.
