We have two material transfer pumps on site, also in a 1-backup configuration. When one of them is started, the pressure gauge shows fluctuations within a certain range, but the flow rate remains normal; whereas the other pump maintains a stable pressure level, with a normal flow rate as well. I would like to ask what could be the reasons for these fluctuations in the pressure gauge reading? How can it be avoided? What should be done with materials that cannot be discharged? (The pressure gauge itself is fine.)
There is air inside the bend of the pressure gauge, which causes fluctuations in the gauge reading.
Is there a problem with the alignment of the pump, or are there issues with the installation of the pump’s inlet and outlet pipelines? Personal opinion!
See what kind of pump it is; pressure fluctuations are quite normal in piston pumps. The pressure of a centrifugal pump hardly fluctuates. The reasons for the fluctuations could be cavitation, problems with the gauge itself, or a low level of silicone oil inside it. It’s caused by excessive vibration of the pump
Reason: The inlet filter is clogged, causing cavitation. Measure: Please use a filter and increase the inlet pressure
The same issue occurred with our pump as well. We measured its vibration level, and it was higher than that of the other pumps. When it was shut down and another pump was used in its place, noises could still be heard from it, and its vibration level remained high after it was shut down as well; after all, the pipeline is connected to the other pump. The same thing happens when the pressure gauge is replaced with a new one – the fluctuations are significant!
This has also happened to one of our centrifugal pumps; I suspect it might be due to cavitation or issues with the pipelines and supports
If the traffic is stable, there should be no major issues; the original poster can observe again to see if the current is stable as well
