Please ask experts to provide an example calculation of a condensing cooler using HTFS.

Although I can use HTFS to calculate some simple heat exchangers, I am not able to use it for calculating condensing coolers (coolers with subcooling). I particularly don’t understand the concept of SUBMERGED TUBES in these devices. Could an expert provide an example of a HTFS calculation for a condensing cooler, along with explanations? Thank you.

The ASPEN documentation provides the following explanation: This parameter applies to horizontal shell-side condensers, and it is relevant when there is a baffle or some other device or geometric feature that causes certain tubes in the exchanger to be submerged under condensate. You specify the average fraction of the heat transfer surface area in such a horizontal shell-side condenser that is submerged by condensate. The value you enter is used by the program to calculate the velocity, and thus the heat transfer coefficient, for condensate cooling. The vapor velocity used in calculating the heat transfer coefficient for the gas phase is also adjusted to account for the reduced vapor flow area. The program compares your input value with the calculated fraction of the surface that needs to be submerged in order to meet the required condensate cooling requirements. You should use this parameter when you want to use a loop seal or liquid level controller to deliberately submerge some of the tubes under condensate. You can adjust the input value iteratively across successive calculations until the input value and the calculated degree of submersion match.
