After electrodialysis desalination, the water content in the crude oil should generally be kept below 0.3%, while the salt content should be less than 3 mg/L. Excess moisture content can affect the operation of the initial distillation tower and cause corrosion of the equipment.
It is considered qualified if the salt content is less than 3 mg/L and the moisture content is less than 0.3%. However, as crude oil becomes of lower quality, refineries now have increasingly higher requirements for electrodialysis, making it more difficult to meet the specified standards; addressing the challenges related to electrodialysis is a problem that plagues petrochemical plants everywhere.

Sinopec stipulates that the salt content in crude oil after desalting should be less than 5 mg NaCl/g, and the water content should be less than 0.3 wt%. The oil content in the electrodialysis desalinated wastewater is less than 200 ppm; currently, it is difficult to achieve this level for wastewater resulting from the processing of low-quality crude oil, with levels generally kept below 5 mgNaCl/g.
