Acidic gases contain high levels of hydrocarbons; insufficient air supply leads to incomplete combustion of these hydrocarbons, resulting in the formation of carbon black. A small amount of this carbon black mixes with sulfur, causing it to turn green; if there is a large amount of carbon black, it turns black. Sulfur mixed with carbon black, commonly referred to as black sulfur in factories, does not melt easily. At the heating temperature provided by the liquid sulfur jacket, its viscosity increases as the amount of carbon black added rises; when this viscosity reaches a certain level, it can cause blockages in the liquid sulfur pipelines
