What is a mechanical seal? What is a floating ring seal? Dry gas seal? Packing seal? It’s so messy! I ask everyone to help distinguish and summarize.
1. A mechanical seal achieves sealing through two sealing surfaces that move relative to each other and are perpendicular to the shaft; hence it is also known as a face seal. 2. A packing seal consists of a packing box, packing rings, a packing gland, long-threaded double-headed bolts, and nuts. During normal operation, the packing must be compressed with a gland to prevent liquid from leaking from the pump shaft. However, it cannot be tightened too much, otherwise the friction between the shaft and the packing increases; in severe cases, this can cause heating, reducing the efficiency of the pump. 3. The dry gas seal is a gas-lubricated, non-contact mechanical seal that belongs to the pump-in type of non-contact sealing structure. The gas film formed by the neutral, high-pressure isolation gas completely blocks the leakage pathways for the relatively low-pressure sealing medium, achieving zero leakage or zero escape of the sealing medium. 4. The full name of the floating ring seal is floating ring-type oil seal; it relies on high-pressure oil to create a pressure oil film in the gap between the shaft and the floating ring in order to prevent gas from passing through. The floating ring automatically aligns itself with the journal thanks to the buoyancy of the oil, allowing for a smaller clearance without any risk of wear. The advantage of this type of seal is that it prevents leaks, while the disadvantage is its complex structure and the need for a dedicated sealing oil system.
