This post was last edited by security on 2010-12-7 08:12. In the welding of dissimilar steels, when welding steel grade 20 with 304, is it acceptable to use 304 welding wire in the absence of 309 welding wire?
According to the provisions of GB50236-98 \"Code for Construction and Acceptance of Welding Works of Process Piping for Field Equipment\", 6.3.1.3 Selection of welding electrodes for welding dissimilar steel grades: (2) When one of the two base metals is an austenitic steel, welding electrodes of the 25Cr-13Ni type or those with a higher nickel content should be used. Compared to ER 304 wire, ER309 has a higher nickel content; therefore, during welding, the nickel content of the weld wire should be higher than that of the base material in order to enhance the strength of the welded joint. So it’s not very appropriate to use ER304 in place of ER309.
