What are strong oxidizing media? What are reducing media? While studying materials for pressure vessels, I noticed that high-chromium-nickel stainless steels exhibit high corrosion resistance in strong oxidizing media such as nitric acid, but they are not resistant to corrosion in reducing media such as hydrochloric acid or dilute sulfuric acid. I don’t quite understand what strong oxidizing media and reducing media are. Could anyone please explain it to me? Thank you very much!

It refers to media that are extremely prone to oxidation as well as easy to be oxidized (i.e., reduced) in reactions
