Question: What material should be used for liquid helium pipelines? Thank you!
The saturation temperature of liquid helium at atmospheric pressure is -268.9℃
Aluminum alloy seamless tubes can be used (allowable temperature: -269°C), such as 5083……
Stainless steel, 0Cr18Ni9, is generally used
Liquid ammonia pipelines are generally made of carbon steel, as it is inexpensive and hardly suffers from corrosion. If you have the means, 304 stainless steel can be used. Someone mentioned above the use of aluminum alloy, but that’s unlikely – the pressure associated with liquid ammonia is high, and the strength of aluminum alloy might not be sufficient.

Thank you all! I’ve heard that stainless steel can be used, but at such low temperatures, a low-temperature impact test is required, which is quite troublesome. I’m not sure where in China one can conduct this test
Reply to 9# prt0683: I agree with the view above; generally, for stainless steel, impact tests on the material and welds are required when the temperature drops below -196°C, and since liquid helium has a temperature of -268.9°C, low-temperature impact tests are definitely necessary. Moreover, after the base material passes the tests, it is necessary to find a suitable welding rod supplier as soon as possible, and then carry out welding evaluation plates and samples... which should be quite troublesome……
