Our factory is preparing to carry out maintenance on the air lift tower, but the Cs137 inside the tower has not been removed. However, the management has ordered the operators to go inside the upper part of the tower to inspect the distributor for any blockages or corrosion. I said that the emitter inside hadn’t been removed, and he replied that the distance between the emitters is around 6 meters, and by then the radiation has already weakened. I know that Cs137 is safe at distances of more than about 2 meters when it’s exposed in the air, but I’m still worried. After all, it’s something invisible and intangible. I wonder if those who work on maintaining the gas lift towers remove the emitters as well.
The nuclear radiation source cesium (CS137) is used in linear radiation sources primarily for applications such as instrumentation, level measurement, and material level detection. Its radioactivity level is very low, generally below 30 millicuries, so no special protection is usually required. The main hazard is that it can cause genetic mutations in cell tissues, leading to cancers such as leukemia. It is used in general instruments; the \"lethal\" range is around one meter, and wearing a lead vest is sufficient to provide protection. If the intensity is 100 millicuries or higher, isolation procedures must be followed.
The end caps need to be removed, and removing and installing the radiation source won’t take long either. There’s no need to worry about these one or two hours; after all, the maintenance staff will also feel at ease once it’s taken out.
