What methods are people using these days to analyze COD and ammonia nitrogen in water? Let’s exchange ideas – are there any methods that are fast and accurate, with little or no waste generated?
The potassium dichromate method and the alkaline potassium permanganate method are quite common, but the analysis takes a long time. However, there are now COD analyzers that seem to make the analysis faster; I haven’t used them though. As for the issue of waste liquid, it probably exists to some extent!

Our company uses a Hash DR890 instrument for COD analysis. The NH4-N analyzer uses a NOVA60 instrument; both of these analysis instruments feature fast analysis speeds and are very user-friendly. For COD colorimetry, the DR2800 instrument is used; not much waste liquid is generated from the NH4-N analysis, but it is essential to wear a gas mask during this process.
Our COD analyzer gives very large deviations in its analysis results; we’re not sure why.
