I’m a novice when it comes to instrumentation; I just graduated from graduate school this year and started working at a Japanese company, where I am responsible for maintaining field instruments. I don’t see much future in that role. Now, a design company has offered me a position in the design of control instruments. I’m not sure what this industry is like – is it more promising than working on field maintenance? I hope everyone can give some advice; I’m so confused
Graduate students doing maintenance? If it’s not a very special industry or type of work, it’s indeed a bit of a waste.
It’s definitely the design institute – you can learn a lot there, which will make it easier to find a new job in the future
Actually, I’m worried that changing jobs after less than a year of working there might have an impact on my future job hunting
Reply to 1# jenn1986: 1. Maintenance is boring – the contact surface is too small, and there’s often little to do, which isn’t conducive to the growth of young people. 2. By designing projects that offer many opportunities for hands-on experience, one can quickly make the transition from pure theory to practical application, which is beneficial in the long run. 3. If there’s no opportunity to work at a large design firm at the moment, it’s better to work at a smaller company first to gain experience – it’s a way to achieve goals indirectly.
With such good conditions, it’s better to pursue design; there will be opportunities to get involved in maintenance later on. Good luck to you~~

It’s indeed a waste of such valuable resources; if there are many types of instruments on site, it might not be a bad idea to gain some on-site experience
It’s better to work in design, unless the salary for maintenance work is high and there are prospects for promotion
Personally, I think working in design is better. In our company, those who are responsible for instrument maintenance work in a secondary support role; their salaries aren’t high. If you want to get promoted, you should work in process engineering
Go and work on design; once you’ve done that, you can then go to the factory for maintenance work. But it seems harder to do it the other way around. After all, while you’re young, you can learn more things
