The acidic water from external devices flows into the acidic water tank. Is it necessary to install a heat tracing line for the acidic water line? If not, will it affect the flow rate of the acidic water?
Acidic water lines usually require heating. However, it is best not to add the acidic water sent to the acidic water tank, as long as it is kept from freezing. Because the acidic water tank contains large amounts of volatile light hydrocarbons and H2S gases, high temperatures can cause them to escape and contaminate the surrounding environment.
The acidic water line, which is in normal operation, generally does not freeze, as the feed pump for acidic water generates high pressure and a high flow rate, making it difficult for freezing to occur; usually, insulation is sufficient to prevent this. Because volatile substances such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are present in acidic water, and the use of heat tracing may cause some of these substances to evaporate, this can result in gas blockages in the acidic water pipeline, making transportation difficult. If the sulfur-containing wastewater is delivered continuously, then no heating is required for the pipelines; insulation alone is sufficient. Since the acidic water composition varies among different devices, some of this acidic water contains light hydrocarbons. When it accumulates in the large sewage tank, the increase in temperature leads to significant flashing, which can cause the water seal at the top of the tank to break, resulting in the release of acidic gases and posing a threat to the safety of people in the surrounding area as well as to the environment. If the sulfur-containing wastewater is delivered intermittently, the pipeline must be insulated to prevent freezing or crystallization-induced blockages. It is recommended to install an insulating layer on the top and upper part of the large tank containing sulfur-containing wastewater, in order to prevent the temperature inside the tank from rising sharply due to direct sunlight in summer, which could lead to an increase in the volatilization of light hydrocarbons and a breakdown of the water seal.
Acidic pipelines are transported continuously without the need for heat tracing.
It is generally not recommended to add steam heating to sewage stripping units; insulation is sufficient.
Adding heat tracing can certainly raise the temperature of the wastewater in an indirect way, but it is not worth it when the temperature inside the wastewater storage tank is already very high. Especially in summer, during heavy downpours, it is easy for nitrogen replenishment to be delayed, resulting in negative pressure inside the tank and thus causing accidents!
The issue of heating acidic water pipelines depends on the region; it is not necessary to use heating in the southern part of the region, but it is essential in the northern part. This is because if freezing occurs and the leaks need to be repaired, it becomes very difficult and dangerous.
To prevent freezing in winter, all acidic water lines in the northern facilities are equipped with heat tracing.
