Question: For the condenser (tube bundle) of a fractionating tower, what are the appropriate situations for horizontal or vertical installation, and why is one installation method chosen over another?
It should be said that whether a horizontal or vertical design is to be used is determined at the design stage; I really haven’t given any serious thought to the question you raised. Horizontal designs are commonly used, especially for installations of a somewhat larger scale; In a horizontal condenser, the baffle plates are arranged \"side by side\"; the material condenses in the shell layer, and as vapor enters, liquid condensate is gradually formed. This condensate flows along the bottom of the horizontal container toward the outlet, without mixing with the vapor that is being condensed, which is beneficial for heat transfer ; On the other hand, if a vertical configuration is used and stripping also occurs through the shell layer, the gas and liquid droplets get mixed together, which is not favorable for heat transfer ; If a vertical configuration must be used, condensation generally takes place in the \"tube side,\" and the heat transfer coefficient in such an arrangement may be lower than that in a horizontal configuration (I haven’t calculated it for vertical setups; those with experience could please share their views) ; Additionally, the horizontal type is easy to manage and operate, with 4 inlets and outlets on the same level.
Horizontal installations generally do not come with a cooling water system, while vertical installations usually are equipped with spraying facilities. The current membrane air coolers are also installed horizontally and come equipped with water spraying, but their principle differs from that of ordinary air coolers
