A certain centrifugal pump can deliver water with a head of 47 meters and a flow rate of 11 cubic meters, as indicated on the pump’s nameplate. Due to the difference in specific gravity, higher input power is required to achieve the same head and flow rate; otherwise, the head will decrease.

Therefore, when dealing with sulfuric acid whose density is 1.8, the motor power is roughly 1.8 times that of the original pump. This factor needs to be taken into consideration when selecting a pump. The water pressure can reach the figure indicated on the nameplate. When pumping water, the head of the pump remains essentially 47 meters, which is equivalent to 4.7 MPa; whereas when pumping sulfuric acid, its density is higher, so if the resistance in the subsequent system is not taken into account, the pressure will be 47 × 1.8 = 8.5 MPa.
Can an IS pump used for water pumping be used to pump sulfuric acid? When ordering the pump, the owner should provide the pump manufacturer with the desired process parameters.
For the same pump, the head required to pump water differs from that required to pump sulfuric acid (H=Pη/Qρ), and this varies depending on the pump’s power and the density of the medium; For pumping acidic media, corrosion-resistant pumps are preferred.

When transferring to a medium with a density of 1.8, it is sufficient as long as the motor has an adequate safety margin in terms of power; there is no need to replace the motor.
