Are the heat exchange tubes made of stainless steel, while the baffle plates and tie rods are made of carbon steel? ? In that case, the carbon steel shouldn’t corrode too quickly. A few days ago the baffle plates were still in good condition and shiny, but today I noticed they were covered in rust. At first I wondered how those stainless steel baffle plates could get so rusty, but after checking the drawings I saw that they were actually made of carbon steel. +_+ According to our regulations, clouds are not allowed
Regarding the heat exchanger, the tube side uses stainless steel as its material due to corrosion resistance requirements; It has been confirmed that the baffle plates and tie rod spacers are made of carbon steel; the cylinder body is also likely to be made of carbon steel. This indicates that the corrosivity of the \"shell layer\" is not high, so carbon steel is sufficient for use in the design. Carbon steel can never compare to stainless steel; it’s impossible for it not to develop any rust at all. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the corrosion is severe – it depends on how much of the metal’s thickness has been affected by corrosion ; Also, check whether the material of the shell is corrosive or not.

Stainless steel has a more positive potential than carbon steel, so carbon steel acts as the anode. If the area of carbon steel is larger than that of stainless steel, it functions as a large anode, and there’s not much of a problem; but in the case of a large piece of stainless steel, carbon steel will corrode
The occurrence of potential corrosion also requires a suitable environment. If the salinity and alkalinity of the fluid in the shell side are very low, potential corrosion will not occur; and if cooling oil is used in the shell side, potential corrosion will certainly not take place either... Personal opinion……

Reply 3# penryn: I’m not familiar with other industries, but in petrochemical and refining heat exchangers, there are many cases like what you mentioned – where the shell side is made of carbon steel while the tube side is made of stainless steel, and such designs work fine with long-term use. Discuss it? No thanks.
It mainly depends on the corrosivity of the medium in the shell side. Many of the heat exchangers we produce use stainless steel for the heat exchange tubes, while carbon steel is used for the baffle plates and support tubes; this setup works well, and even if there is some corrosion, it has little impact on the equipment.
Standards are static; people are dynamic. The standard is sixty points; design is not just about passing.
