How to handle power outages during sulfur recovery?
This issue is covered in your operating procedures; just search on the forum. Generally, each unit is equipped with a power failure interlock system; when a power failure occurs, this interlock activates automatically. It then directs all acid gas to the flare, closes the valves that allow acid gas to enter the furnace, activates nitrogen to protect the burners, shuts off the water supply and drainage valves of the auxiliary boiler, provides protection for the coolers (via outlet temperature controls), implements high-dilution protection, closes the valves for exhaust gases and air, shuts off the steam supplied to the stripping and regeneration reboilers, and closes the outlet valves of all pumps. Most importantly, this system prevents situations such as backflow of acid gas, continued entry of gases into the furnace, or a shortage of water in the auxiliary boiler, thereby avoiding accidents involving personnel and equipment.
When the power to the air blower was cut off, the shutdown was handled in accordance with the emergency shutdown procedure!
The technology related to sulfur is quite mature, and the safety systems are also well-developed. In the event of a power outage, acidic gases, gas, hydrogen, and air are generally shut off, and the SCOT system is automatically deactivated; an emergency shutdown procedure can be carried out immediately after the power loss
