Methanol has now become an industry with an absolute surplus; the key issue is that we have not found suitable downstream applications for it. How can we identify products for which methanol can be used? Currently, some efforts are being made to use coal to produce olefins – what about using methanol to produce olefins instead? Is it possible to find Chinese design experts to develop large-scale installations in this area? Do I know too little? Please give your support; perhaps this is a promising industry for methanol!!! Share your information with us so that we can all use it!
Coal-derived olefins are also obtained through methanol. It is unclear whether it is pure methanol or crude methanol; I suspect it is pure methanol.
The fluidized-bed MTP, developed jointly by Tsinghua University, Sinopec, and Huaihua, is an internationally advanced technology! The 30,000-ton pilot plant is performing well in Huahua. Looking forward to joining in the development.
Significant progress has been made on the path toward domestic production of olefins via methanol produced from coal through this technological approach. Technical expertise is being accumulated, and there are many reports on this topic available in forums. As the world’s first project to produce polyolefins from coal, the Shenhua Baotou coal-to-olefins demonstration project’s successful commissioning marks China’s leadership in mastering the key technologies for industrializing coal-based olefins. It opens up new avenues for reducing the carbon footprint of high-carbon fuels and replacing petroleum, and it establishes China’s position as a global leader in the industrialization of coal-based olefins. This is of great significance for China’s efforts to promote low-carbon economic development, reduce its reliance on foreign petroleum supplies, and ensure energy strategic security. On December 11, 2006, the **Development and Reform Commission officially approved the Shenhua Baotou coal-to-olefins project, which was the only coal-to-olefins project approved during the **11th Five-Year Plan period. The Shenhua Baotou Coal-to-Olefins Pilot Project is not only the world’s first industrial project to produce polyolefin products from coal as a raw material, but it is also the largest chemical complex in the world that utilizes the coal-based methanol-to-olefins technology. Its core facility utilizes the DMTO process technology with independent Chinese intellectual property rights. The project includes a coal-based methanol integrated chemical plant with an annual production capacity of 1.8 million tons, a methanol-based polyolefin integrated petrochemical plant with an annual production capacity of 600,000 tons, as well as supporting thermal power plants, utility facilities, auxiliary production equipment, and off-site projects – totaling six systems and 46 units and devices. The construction and commissioning of the Shenhua Baotou coal-to-olefins project set multiple new records in China’s chemical and petrochemical industry: it was the most cost-effective project investment. The total investment in the project is approximately 17 billion yuan (including the air separation unit), which is nearly 2 billion yuan less than the investment required for similar projects of the same scale ; The project quality is the best. The quality compliance rate for project construction is 100% ; Project safety is optimal. The project achieved 1,238 days of safe production, setting the best record for safety in the chemical and petrochemical construction industry to date ; The project is progressing the fastest. The actual effective construction period for the project is only 23 months. One month ahead of the scheduled construction timeline, and more than 6 months faster than the construction of similar projects of the same scale ; Latest project management model. Professional and integrated management is implemented for the construction and operation of Shenhua’s coal-to-oil chemical projects, with a multi-level matrix management structure involving the project owner, general contractors, construction subcontractors, and supervisors. This approach ensures comprehensive control over aspects such as project safety, quality, schedule, costs, contracts, and risks, thereby establishing a new model for core project management by the owner ; The project achieves a win-win and harmonious outcome: the owner has established positive, mutually beneficial, and harmonious partnership relationships with local authorities and institutions, general contractors, construction subcontractors, suppliers, and others ; The project can start trial operation with material feeding as quickly as possible. On May 30, 2010, the integrated chemical plant with an annual production capacity of 1.8 million tons of coal-based methanol began operations; on July 3, MTO-grade methanol was produced. On August 8, the methanol-to-olefins unit started up for trial operation, and it took only 2 and a half months to complete the entire process for producing olefins from coal. The most economical raw material for MTO is crude methanol, rather than refined methanol that meets national standards. It’s mainly a cost issue – the price of high-purity methanol according to national standards is much higher than that of crude methanol. It can be seen that MTO does not have very strict requirements regarding the purity of the methanol feed; aside from cost considerations, the feed also needs to be diluted in order to reduce its partial pressure. So pure methanol is also not needed. It is necessary to run the industrial demonstration plant for an extended period of time in order to determine the extent to which the impurities present in methanol affect the MTO reaction catalyst.
I’m new here; I’m learning*. . . Private communication, ya
Take your time; it’s a technology that will inevitably become widespread. Do we not have confidence in our own technologies? Companies like Lenovo are about to start working on olefin projects right now
At present, the most advanced domestic technology for producing olefins from methanol is the NTO process developed by the Dalian Institute of Physical Chemistry. On August 8, 2010, the world’s first industrial plant for converting methanol into olefins using China’s own intellectual property rights (with an annual production capacity of 600,000 tons of olefins) was successfully put into operation in Baotou after a single trial run. Qualified polyolefin products were produced within a week, with the methanol conversion rate and olefin selectivity meeting or exceeding the design specifications. This process was developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, with industrial-scale testing carried out by Shaanxi Xinxing Coal Chemical Technology Development Co., Ltd.
Although there are successful examples of coal-based olefin (methanol-to-olefins) projects in China at present, it will take time to prove the economic viability of this technology, as such projects do not take just one year to complete. True success lies in having low operating costs in the later stages.
Reply 1# yfjin2010 is crude methanol
Use crude methanol? ? This is quite good; the consumption should be on the higher side, but the overall energy consumption should remain low. For Chinese companies developing MTO or MTP technologies, I believe the energy consumption will not be very high, especially for those well-managed enterprises. As coal chemical companies, we look forward to the adoption of these technologies so as to contribute to the development in this field
