Could someone knowledgeable please advise on how to select an analytical instrument for dust analysis?
It depends on how you want to detect dust. For online detection, there are online dust concentration detectors available. For laboratory analysis, only the isokinetic sampling method can be used; all other manual sampling methods are ineffective. However, the isokinetic sampling method is quite cumbersome to operate. It’s acceptable for calibration purposes, but it’s not practical for routine dust detection. Of course, you can also opt for portable devices, but they only provide rough estimates—they’re not very accurate. Moreover, portable devices can only be used in environments with low temperature and pressure; they become impractical when these conditions aren’t met.
I just want to conduct analytical monitoring on a daily basis
“Routine”? This concept is a bit vague. It can be interpreted as using online dust monitoring instruments, or portable ones. It can also refer to manual testing methods – all of these can fulfill the requirement of “routine” monitoring. If you place importance on dust monitoring, or if your superiors care about this issue, then it’s better to opt for online monitoring systems. If it doesn’t matter to you, then feel free to use portable devices or manual testing methods instead. In China, dust monitoring isn’t given much attention; even though there are constant calls for action, local authorities and enterprises tend to prioritize their immediate interests. They fail to truly recognize the significance of dust monitoring from a conceptual standpoint. In reality, proper dust monitoring will undoubtedly bring benefits to enterprises in the long run. Of course, in the short term, investments must be made to purchase appropriate dust monitoring equipment.

If you don’t really care about costs, just go with the online option! Manual analysis typically involves gravimetric methods, utilizing standard analytical instruments. However, the analytical procedure itself leads to relatively large errors in this method. For instance, one must dry the filter cartridge or filter paper for two hours, followed by an additional hour of drying at a constant temperature. Upon removal, the weight must be measured immediately; otherwise, moisture absorption will occur, rendering the data inaccurate. The final data is then calculated based on the difference between this value and that of a blank sample. Consequently, the reliability of such data is rather poor.
