Is it necessary to install a pulse damper at the outlet of a metering pump? If it is not installed, what is the impact on the piping?
The outlet pressure and flow rate of metering pumps are pulsating. For applications requiring a steady flow, a surge tank or similar device is needed. However, if there are no special requirements, it can be omitted without any adverse effects on the pump itself.
It needs to be installed; otherwise, the pipeline will vibrate heavily and the pressure gauge will keep shaking constantly
Our company is currently installing pulse dampers. Without them, the pipelines would experience significant vibrations when the pump is in operation, which is very dangerous.

It’s very important; it must be installed. It plays a crucial role in maintaining stable outlet pressure, reducing pipeline vibration, and protecting equipment.
Metal hoses can be installed at the inlet and outlet to reduce the impact of pipeline stress and vibrations on the pump head; however, this method does not help in reducing pulsations
The metering pump generates pulses due to the reciprocating motion of the plunger; these pulses increase in magnitude depending on the size of the metering pump model. A buffer has been installed to smooth out the metering pump pulses. If not installed, as long as the manufacturing process permits, it can also function without being affected by pulses.
According to the manufacturer’s design requirements, it generally needs to be installed; otherwise, pipe vibration will be quite significant.
The surge suppressors weren’t installed on the reciprocating pumps in our company. When the pumps are in operation, the pipelines vibrate excessively, which is very dangerous. The outlet pipelines are connected to pressure vessels; there’s a risk of leaks due to such vibrations. They definitely need to be installed!
