Our company was involved in the design of a hazardous chemicals storage area that includes storage tanks for concentrated sulfuric acid. Party A requests the installation of a vent valve on the storage tank. Our company did not include it in the preliminary design phase because many other companies did not have it either. The decision regarding whether to install a vent valve is a matter of balance – it makes sense to have one as well as not to have one; let’s discuss this together.

I believe that sulfuric acid storage tanks do not necessarily require a vent valve, as it is not a flammable or explosive substance; the key is to consider the tank’s design capacity to withstand internal and external pressures. Of course, it’s fine to install a vent valve as well, but the opening pressure is very important. It’s not clear whether there are any standards requiring its installation
The main function of a breathing valve is to maintain pressure balance inside the tank with the outside environment, preventing both negative pressure (which can cause the tank to collapse under such conditions) and overpressure. For example, when feeding and discharging from a storage tank, a breather valve is used to balance the pressure with the outside atmosphere, thereby maintaining a stable pressure inside the tank. So, personally, I think it’s better to install it.
The installation must be good! Reason: 1. As the temperature changes, a pressure difference exists between the inside of the tank and the outside environment, which may cause the tank to deform. 2. When materials are loaded or unloaded, it can also cause a pressure difference inside and outside the tank. Canning failures or collapsed cans occur. 3. The main purpose of a breathing valve is to balance the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the tank; understanding this function means understanding the previous two points as well!
