Just starting to work with ESD. According to information found online, it is an emergency stop system. But the design is such that a row of buttons and switches all require signal verification by the DCS cards before the DCS interlock program can be executed. Question 1: Is this still considered ESD? According to information found online, it is generally said that ESD does not pass through the DCS, but the DCS can only monitor the status of ESD events.
What you described doesn’t seem to be ESD; it might be a hardware console for DCS
It seems like you’re saying that logic is executed in the DCS. In the case of true ESD signals, they go directly to the ESD system, and the signals within the ESD system are generally transmitted to the DCS for monitoring. You can take a look at the wiring diagram.
ESD is a hardware-independent system and should not be included in the DCS. What you’re referring to seems to be the auxiliary control panel.

You must be referring to the auxiliary control panel. Generally, DCS and ESD systems are two independent systems; however, the two systems may be connected through communication or direct wiring. In our plant, the ESD and DCS signals are such that field signals are transmitted through one-input two-output safety barriers (for analog signals) or relays (for digital signals), thereby enabling the transmission and control of a single signal across two systems.

What you're doing here with ESD on DCS is generally not allowed; the safety level and scanning speed of DCS do not meet the requirements for ESD! It’s best to do them separately
