The indoor hygiene in our laboratory used to be very poor; there was coal tar, soft asphalt, carbon black oil, and other substances spilled on the floors, making it very difficult to clean up. The window has now been modified; samples can no longer be sent to the testing laboratory. The floor condition is still acceptable. But it’s not possible to do that in a fume hood; the black tabletop is fine, but the white walls on both sides and at the back of the fume hood present a problem. It’s very difficult to clean off, whether it gets stuck on or splashes on. Trying to clean it with toluene or acetone is troublesome and time-consuming; not only is it a waste of toluene and acetone, but the cleaning result isn’t satisfactory either. Friends who are coming to Haichuan, if you have experience working in similar laboratories or have good methods and tips, please share them here; I would be extremely grateful! Also, for companies that engage in the deep processing of coal tar, what kind of sampling buckets do you use for sampling in your company? What are some ways to keep the outer wall of the sampling bucket clean?
Clean with toluene or crude benzene, then use hot water with detergent.
This is a common problem; there’s no other way to clean the floors and countertops except by using toluene. For sampling issues, generally a piece of paper should be placed at the bottom of the container when sampling from the workstation; more waste paper should be kept on the work surface, and the sample should be placed on that paper. As for the outer wall of the cylinder, it can stay as it is – as long as no oil drips from it. There are also pull handles on display cases; a good solution is to stick a strip of colored paper on them. If it gets dirty, remove it and replace it. Do not touch the display cases with greasy gloves. Otherwise, it’s difficult to recover.
