What are the requirements for the media flowing in the tube side and shell side of a heat exchanger?

Fluids suitable for flow inside pipes: 1) Unclean and scaling-prone fluids, as they can be easily cleaned from within the pipes; 2) Corrosive fluids, as this prevents simultaneous corrosion of the tubes and shell, and allows for easy cleaning and maintenance of the tubes ; 3) Fluids with high pressure, as it allows for savings in shell material ; 4) Toxic fluids, as this can reduce the chances of leakage. Media suitable for flowing through the shell side: 1) Saturated steam, as it facilitates the timely removal of condensate; moreover, steam is relatively clean, making cleaning easier ; 2) The cooled fluid benefits from heat dissipation via the housing, thereby enhancing the cooling effect ; 3) Fluids with high viscosity or low flow rates; under the effect of baffles, the convective heat transfer coefficient of such fluids can be improved ; 4) For heat exchangers with rigid structures, if there is a large temperature difference between the two fluids, placing the medium with a higher convective heat transfer coefficient on the shell side can reduce thermal stress.
