The total carbon in the air should be divided into two categories: 1. Inorganic carbon: including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, which can be analyzed easily using chromatography. 2. Organic carbon: This includes total hydrocarbons and other non-hydrocarbon organic substances. The composition and concentration of these substances vary greatly depending on the environment. Chromatography can be used to analyze most of them, but for some, especially those that are toxic, special or dedicated analytical methods are generally required. There are national standards for this; it is used for testing in the environment, measuring total hydrocarbons and non-methane total hydrocarbons. Generally, a chromatograph equipped with a six-way valve is used – it’s convenient for measuring total hydrocarbons. Glass bead columns are used for detecting non-methane total hydrocarbons; since the goal is to separate methane, the TDX-01 column is sufficient for that purpose. We have done it.
