Analysis of the leakage causes in floating-head heat exchangers!

1. Corrosion and thinning of the heat exchange tubes in the tube bundle; 2. Loose small floating head bolts or improper alignment of the gaskets
Based on what is encountered in practice, there are mainly two possibilities: 1) The weld at the spot where the heat exchange tubes are joined suffers from weld metal loss, or the weld metal thins due to corrosion – this is quite common; 2) Corrosion leads to perforations in the heat exchange tubes. These issues are common in cooling equipment that uses circulating water. In floating-head heat exchangers where both the tubes and the shell are filled with oily media, I have not yet seen any leaks (of course, the number of such devices is limited). As for leaks caused by gaskets, I think this is a rare occurrence; generally, there are no problems with installation, unless 1) the wrong type of gasket is used – it’s better to use wavy-patterned gaskets or reinforced graphite gaskets； 2 means that the flange sealing surface is uneven
