Recently I have been working on a special article on safety, and one issue that came up is that the client uses natural gas to burn waste ammonia gas. The evaluation agency classified this device as Category C, based on the fact that boiler rooms are also defined using natural gas for combustion. I have some doubts regarding this; could someone provide a more detailed explanation? Or tell me what category this device should be classified under, and which standards apply? Thank you
This post was last edited by nanbo888 on 2011-2-17 at 19:45. The original poster made a mistake; the fire hazard of ammonia is classified as Category B. Liquid ammonia should be classified as Category B, Subcategory 2, for the following reasons:

I know that the fire classification for ammonia is Class B, while that for natural gas is Class A. The key point is that the evaluation agency has classified this device as belonging to the boiler room category, thus assigning it to Class C. What I want to ask is whether this classification is appropriate; according to the classification system, if the concentration of natural gas is greater than 1 L/m3, it should be classified as Class A, otherwise it falls under Class B.

How can Class A and Class B materials used in the facility end up in a Class C structure? Boiler rooms should be built to fire resistance ratings of Class 1 or Class 2; however, boiler rooms with coal-fired boilers whose total evaporation rate is no more than 4 tons per hour can use structures with a fire resistance rating of Class 3. The fire hazard in the boiler room should be classified as Class D. For details, see Article 3.1.1 of the Building Code and its explanatory provisions.
